This is the initial rough sketch I did after working out some details with Sylvia (OrthodoxMom.com).
From there, I made the final drawing.
Next, I transferred the design to a block of hard carving wax.
More and more wax is carved away, revealing the design.
Here we have the front of the finished wax carving.
This is the carving on the back. Now a mold will be made from this wax. Then, molten wax can be injected into the mold. This provides a copy of the original piece that will be used in the process of lost wax casting.
Lost wax casting is a process by which the wax is uncased in plaster, the wax is burned, leaving a cavity in the plaster, and molten metal is poured into the cavity. Then the metal piece is broken out of the plaster, and the raw metal casting is finished.
